Most days we take our eyes for granted, for as long as they work everything is fine. But your eyes are more complex and interesting than you might think. After doing a bit of research I have found ten amazing facts about our eyes as well as some fun eyebombing pictures to look at while we read them…
Blind Spot
FACT: Each of your eyes has a blind spot that is the result of the connecting point between the optic nerve and retina.
You Might Have Grandmas Eyes
FACT: Recessive genes for eye colour, such as blue and green, can resurface after several generations of remaining hidden
Scratchproof
FACT: Your eyes have super powerful healing abilities. Your eyes have the ability to filter out dust, dirt and heal scratches in as little time as 48 hours.
Lots of Rods
FACT: You have about 130 million rods and 7 million cone cells in your eyes. Rods are the cells which help you to see in the dark.
No Eye Swap
FACT: Eye transplants are not yet possible to make the blind see because the optic nerve is so complex and sensitive and it has not yet been discovered how to regenerate healthy retinal cells.
Blue-Eyed Family
FACT: People with brown eyes simply have more melanin than people with blue eyes. However, if you have blue eyes did you know that you have a common ancestor with every other blue-eyed person on the planet?
What Does My Eye Weigh?
FACT: Your eye weighs only about 28 eight grams and is approximately two and a half centimetres wide, but contains 6 muscles.
3 Colour Blind
FACT: You actually only see three colours; red, blue, and green. All other colours are created through the combination of these three colours.
Shrink and Grow
FACT: Try this basic experiment: Walk into the bathroom with the lights off – turn on the light while looking in the mirror – watch how your pupil shrinks!
How Fast is a Blink?
FACT: A blink lasts approximately one-tenth of a second, but there is no clear-cut average number of blinks per minute. In fact, blink rates per minute vary from 2 blinks to 50 blinks per minute per person.
